Cake Smash Photographer in NJ: Armando's First Birthday Studio Session & Party

Armando First Birthday

      • Cake Smash Photographer in NJ: Armando’s First Birthday Studio Session & Party

Armando turned one, and his family did what I always hope families will do — they let us have the whole day. Not just twenty minutes of portraits, but the studio session, the mess, the party, and every face in the room watching him figure out what a cake is.

I’m Ivone. Mario and I run MC Productions out of our studio in Roselle Park, New Jersey, and first birthdays are quietly one of my favorite things we photograph. There’s no posing to fight, no schedule to keep. There’s just a one-year-old meeting frosting for the first time, and a family who will want to watch that moment again in fifteen years.

        The Studio Cake Smash Session

We started at our Roselle Park studio, before the cake, while Armando was still spotless.

That first stretch matters more than people expect. Those are the clean, timeless portraits — the ones that end up framed in the hallway and printed for grandparents. A simple backdrop, good light, his outfit still crisp, and just enough time for him to warm up to us and to the room.

Then we brought out the cake.

Some babies dive straight in. Some poke it once and look at their mother to see if they’re in trouble. Armando took a moment, decided it was allowed, and then committed entirely. Frosting on his hands, in his hair, everywhere — and the kind of laughing you can’t direct or fake. That’s the whole point of a cake smash. You set the stage carefully so that when the real moment happens, you’re ready for it and you stay out of its way.

We finished with a cleanup so he left comfortable, and his family left with two completely different sets of images from one afternoon.

Then We Followed Them to the Party

A few weeks later we photographed and filmed Armando’s first birthday party at [PARTY VENUE OR TOWN].

This is the part most cake smash photographers don’t do, and I think it’s the part families miss most later on. The studio session is about the baby. The party is about everyone who showed up for him — grandparents, cousins, the friends who have been there since the beginning. It’s the only record of who was in his life during his first year.

We captured  the party, celebration, piñata, and all the fun. All of it candid, with a little guided posing when the whole family was finally in one place, because you don’t get that group together often.

And then his family came back to us again, for his little brother’s first birthday. Which, honestly, is the review I care about most.

Why We Shoot First Birthdays in Photo and Video

Photos hold the frame. Video holds the sound.

You forget what a one-year-old’s laugh sounds like faster than you’d believe. You forget the pitch of your mother’s voice singing happy birthday, and the exact way your baby said a word he only said that year. A photograph can’t give you that back. A film can.

Mario handles the video while our team covers stills, so nothing is traded off — you’re not choosing between a photographer who shoots some video or a videographer who grabs a few frames. Both, properly, from one team who already know each other’s rhythm. One booking, one point of contact, one delivery.

      • First Birthday & Cake Smash Questions, Answered

What is a cake smash session? A studio photo session around a baby’s first birthday where the child gets their own small cake to explore, taste, and destroy. Ours start with clean portraits, move into the cake, and end with a cleanup, so you leave with both polished and playful images.

What age is best? Eleven to thirteen months. Most babies sit steadily on their own by then and are curious enough to reach for the cake, but not so mobile that they crawl off the set.

How long does it take? About sixty minutes in studio. That includes outfit changes, portraits before the cake, the smash, and cleanup — paced so the baby can take breaks.

Do you photograph the party too, or only the studio session? Both. We cover the studio cake smash and the party itself, in photo and video, with the same team. Most cake smash photographers in New Jersey do the studio session only.

Where is your studio? 481 East Westfield Avenue, Roselle Park, New Jersey 07204, in Union County. We photograph first birthdays throughout New Jersey and the New York metro area.

How far ahead should I book? Six to eight weeks. That leaves room to plan the setup and outfits and still shoot before your baby turns thirteen months.

What should my baby wear? Something you don’t mind losing. Bring a spare outfit for the clean portraits and one for the cake. Simple colors photograph better than busy patterns, and bare feet always look right at this age.

Let’s Plan Your Baby’s First Birthday

The first year goes faster than anyone warns you. If you’re planning a cake smash session, a first birthday party, or both, I’d love to hear what you have in mind.

You can see more of our work in our gallery of events or browse all our milestone celebrations. And when the next milestone comes around — we handle christenings and baptisms too. Families tend to start with us here and stay for years.
