Case Study: Capturing the Magic of Reading – A Commercial Photography Assignment in New Jersey
When we were hired for a commercial photography assignment documenting Scholastic readers in action, we knew this would be a unique opportunity to showcase the power of reading in a real-world educational setting. Our task was to capture professional school photos that emphasized the engagement and interaction between children and books, highlighting how stories come alive in the classroom.
One of the biggest challenges of educational photography is balancing authenticity with minimal disruption. In this case, we needed to photograph students naturally interacting with books while allowing their school day to flow uninterrupted. Unlike posed promotional school photography or traditional staff headshots, this assignment required a documentary-style approach to preserve genuine emotions and real-time reactions.
To achieve this, we spent an hour and a half in the classroom, embedding ourselves within the learning environment. Our focus was on capturing:
Children’s genuine reactions to the stories they were reading.
Expressions of joy, curiosity, and excitement as they engaged with books.
Teachers and staff facilitating discussions and guiding students through the learning experience.
Natural interactions between students, showing the community and connection that reading fosters.
By using discreet photography techniques and avoiding staged moments, we created an authentic representation of classroom engagement. The final images showcased students completely absorbed in the magic of reading, reinforcing the importance of literacy in a child’s development.
The purpose of this shoot was to encourage a culture of reading. These images will serve as powerful visuals for school branding, promotional materials, and educational campaigns. They highlight the value of reading in early education and can inspire both parents and educators to foster a love for books among children.
