There’s a particular kind of joy in a Sweet 16 — old enough to feel grown, young enough to still light up at her own party. Ella’s had all of it.
When a family is looking for a Sweet 16 photographer in Clark, NJ, what they’re really asking for is someone who can hold the whole day at once — the quiet portraits before the doors open and the wall of noise when the room finally fills. Ella’s celebration at The Gran Centurions gave us both, and Mario and the team were there for every bit of it. Here’s how the day unfolded.
Before the doors openedThe calm before the celebration
We arrived early, while the ballroom was still being set and the details were fresh — the tablescapes, the little touches a family plans for months. That quiet stretch is where the family portraits happen: Ella with Mom and Dad, with both her brothers, with her godmother and her best friend, and a set with each of her grandparents so no one gets lost in the shuffle later. These are the frames families reach for years down the line, and they’re worth slowing down for.
Then it was the birthday girl’s turn. We took Ella outside, back inside, and into the empty ballroom while the light was still ours alone — a run of portraits that let her enjoy the version of herself she’d spent all that time getting ready to be.

As the guests rolled in, we turned to the room itself — the details, the tables, the way it all looked before a single napkin had moved. And then the moment the whole night pivots on: Ella’s grand entrance, met by a room of people who love her. Capturing an entrance well is half timing and half anticipation; you learn to feel it a beat before it happens.
A dance with dad
The moment that quiets the room
Every Sweet 16 has one moment where the volume drops and everyone just watches — for Ella, it was the dance with her dad. These are the frames we shoot the closest, because the expressions move fast and they don’t come back. It’s the heart of the night, and it’s the kind of thing you want captured, not remembered secondhand.

Then came the speeches — the ones that make her laugh, the ones that make her cry, and usually one that manages both. After that, the sixteen candles: the small ceremony where she names the people who got her here. It’s tender and a little chaotic and completely her, and it’s one of our favorite parts of any Sweet 16 to film.
And then, of course, everyone sang. Happy birthday, cake, the whole beautiful ritual.
And then they dancedThe party, exactly as it happened
From there we let the night be itself. No staging, no interrupting — just Ella and her people on the dance floor, the way a good party is meant to run. Our house style leans photojournalistic for exactly these stretches: we stay out of the way and let the real thing happen, stepping in only when a moment asks to be posed. By the time the music wound down, we had the whole arc of the evening — the calm, the entrance, the dance, the candles, and hours of pure, un-choreographed joy.

The Gran Centurions sits at 440 Madison Hill Road in Clark, NJ, just off Garden State Parkway Exit 135 — a family-run banquet hall that’s been hosting Union County celebrations for decades. Two ballrooms, in-house Italian catering, and plenty of free parking make it a genuinely easy place to throw a party, whether it’s a Sweet 16, a milestone birthday, a bar or bat mitzvah, or a wedding.
