Some couples want a backdrop that already looks like a painting. For Courtney and Chris, that meant a Sayen House and Gardens engagement session — an afternoon among the azaleas, footbridges, and quiet ponds of one of New Jersey’s most beautiful botanical gardens.
A garden made for love stories
Tucked into historic Hamilton Square, Sayen House and Gardens began in 1912, when world traveler Frederick Sayen planted 30 acres with species he’d gathered from China, Japan, and England. More than a century later, the grounds still bloom with over a thousand azaleas, hundreds of rhododendrons, and a quarter-million spring bulbs — reflected in koi ponds and crossed by white trellis footbridges. People often compare it to a Monet painting, and standing on the bridge at golden hour, it’s easy to see why.
It’s also free to wander, open dawn to dusk, which makes it one of our favorite central-NJ spots for a relaxed engagement session. (One quick planning note if you’re considering your own: photo sessions at Sayen do require a simple permit through Hamilton Township — worth arranging ahead of time.)

We spent the afternoon letting them simply be themselves — a slow loop along the trails, a pause on the footbridge, a quiet moment by the gazebo with the blooms behind them. A garden like this does a lot of the work; our job is mostly to keep up, catch the real laughs, and let the light do the rest. By the end they were completely at ease in front of the camera — which is exactly the point of an engagement session before the wedding day.
